MARTHA: Trial Period Leads to Job at Gym

Martha worked in the laundry room of a hotel. Although she did a very good job and was content with her daily schedule, she would continually talk about wanting to have a job working with athletes.

Martha’s employment support team decided to meet with her to learn more about her array of interests. The team went with Martha to stores that sell exercise equipment, as well as, to athletic environments as part of the Discovery process.

It became very clear that Martha wanted to work in a gym. The support team contacted the owner of the gym in their office complex. He was agreeable to talking with Martha and her job coach. The owner indicated he would try Martha working in his business for a week to see how “it goes”.
The week turned into 2 weeks then 3 weeks then a job.

Using her Individual Training Account Martha purchased a weight machine that the gym did not have so she could operate the machine and teach the gym members exercises after she received training on the machine. She is happy with her gym jobs and has a valuable role in the gym helping other to stay in shape.
